Ritual of the Gore Shrine EP Review By BlackCloud

BlackCloud is a five piece death/doom band that formed in Port Huron, Michigan in 2021. Originally starting as a quartet instrumental band for the first two years, they added their vocalist Taylor to the mix along side Mitch and Bryce on guitar, Adam on drums and Brenda on bass to put them where they are today. With influences such as Draconian, Runemagick and The 3rd and the Mortal, you know you are in for a ride. The atmosphere that each songs sets is what makes this EP. So relax, sit back in your favorite easy chair, fill your goblet with the blood of your enemies and lets check this this thing out shall we?

I honestly didn’t know what to expect after I heard the introduction “Painting the Phantom Mural”. It has a very creepy nightmare vibe that really sets the stage for whats to come in “Ghost in the House of God”. The song starts right away with powerful guitars that make me want to hop on a Viking Longship and pillage the nearest town. The atmosphere of the song is very much that of Norwegian and Swedish metal that is very dark and brooding. The omnipotent vocals really fill out the song as well.

Thing take a very different turn in my opinion with “Replenishing Frostbite”. It reminds me a lot of Underoath’s first album “Act Of Depression” at the beginning with dark vocals that guide us along on our journey as it gets heavier and heavier, bleeding into the title track.

“Ritual of the Gore Shrine” is a perfectly arranged masterpiece of an EP, that brings a lot of heat that might make Nathan Explosion crap his pants. BlackCloud really drives it home with the live videos I’ve seen with this song and you can tell that these individuals are not to be taken lightly. The final song, “She Drowns in the Chalice” really bring out their melodic side and lets that shine through, right before they grab you by the throat for more brutal vocals while bringing the tempo down.

Overall, I give the EP a 7/10 and only because I wish I could have heard the guitar solo shine through more on Replenishing Frostbite. Im very excited to see where BlackCloud goes next, these folks definitely have a dark future ahead of them, all jokes aside.
