Many modern metal bands face a certain dilemma in the streaming age: how does a group stand out in a crowded market? With collectives like Spiritbox cracking the Billboard Top 20, pop-flavored metalcore is big right now and a lot of acts strive to find a similar balance in their own music. Houston-based group Reasons answers this question with a potpourri of influences all blending together into a clear sound. On recent single “Won’t Forgive,” the band wastes no time, starting things off with a speedy riff complimented with syncopated, half-time drums – a unique combination that weaves its way in and out of the song with more traditional chugging to break the structure up. During these sections, guest vocalist Christian O’Neal of Oklahoman band Chemical Youth shows off his range with expressive mid-pitched screams and high shrieks. The real kicker though is the song’s chorus: the drums pick up, the guitars switch to power chords, and the vocalist belts out a catchy, melodic refrain that enters one’s head and doesn’t leave. Its pop-punk influence is undeniable, with the vocals bearing equal influence from Yellowcard’s Ryan Key and Underoath’s Spencer Chamberlain. The lyrics follow suit; the lyrics in the verses are confrontational to match the harshness of the vocals, while the chorus lyrics show sympathy but acceptance of a broken friendship. When the song reaches its climactic breakdown, it feels earned, powerful, and conclusive. Definitely worth listening to for those who crave that pop-metalcore sweet spot.
